LA Gun Club

August 19, 2010

Gun laws in the UK are very strict and few people get the chance to fire one off in the country. When I first found out Saul was coming I asked if he had any interest in shooting a gun. I think that was the second reason why he came to visit California, the first being a wedding. Usually I go out to the desert with my dad and brother, but due to certain circumstances and last minute planning, we had to opt for the Los Angeles Gun Club. I have been shooting guns since I was a little boy and have never been to a shooting range, so this was a new experience for me too. Here are some photos of our experience.

safety first

Started with a 9mm, moved along to the .357 magnum, then went dirty harry, the .44 magnum.

it’s that easy.

Saul loved it, next time he visits we are going to the desert and shooting a lot more guns.

Boston

February 24, 2010

When I went back east, I also went to Boston. I haven’t been there since I was 12 and it was just as I remembered. Lots of bricks. I liked it.

These photos were taken with my broken and now sold Rollei 35s. That camera is great but guessing distances (to focus it) is difficult for me. These shots were exposed using the in camera meter, and I am quite please with the results that the Ilford HP5 400 film yielded. I am often captivated by light, specifically the shapes it helps define and the shadows created. It is all geometry and composition to me with a little flare. Dig it.

New York in COLOR

February 1, 2010

So I took a much needed trip to NYC recently along with several New England cities but spending most of my time in New York. I once lived there several years ago and have debated since leaving if I want to return. Thinking it was the weather that turned me away, I realized it was actually the city. Too much city and no escape created an island fever in me and being trapped is not my favorite feeling. I much prefer the spread out landscape of California. Yes I am home.

Here are a couple of my favorite shots from my color rolls. All shot with my now partially retired rollei 35s.

Polaroids are Magical

December 16, 2009

I came across this site the other day, POLAPREMIUM, a polaroid site and saw a little contest to enter a polaroid to be seen in Time Square, NYC. Typically all of the posts on here are current works in progress, but since I don’t shoot much polaroids anymore I had to dig up work from the past. The first image is the one I submitted the others are some of my favorites from the past. I realized I have a lot that were never scanned and want to get on that. Add that to my list of things to do.

As much as I love polaroids, I am not going to pain myself over getting the last of the last left. I will move on and adapt to the Fuji alternatives however their peel apart packs don’t fit as well as I found out with my Land Camera Automatic 100. I must admit, those new Fuji Instax cameras do strike my fancy.

An outtake for an ad I created for those shorts, it’s me. SX-70

I’m with the band

November 19, 2009

I always seem to be around musicians and other talented art like people. I love it. This also seems to be the people I take the most photos of. Here are some captures of the band BadFeet. Apparently I am in the band.

A little drive

November 16, 2009

I like to drive, it is kind of my escape and way of getting away from it all. I also love an efficient public transportation system without the need of a car. Living in New York was difficult for me because of the lack of room to roam, although there is lots of beauty outside the city, you would have to take a train or bus to go. That made it difficult to fly by the seat of your pants, and that is something that thrills me. Being back in California makes so much sense to me, however I am still trying to figure out where I want to base my career.

I decided to make a little drive up the state to visit some friends and enjoy a little taste of their local life. I stayed in Monterey, San Francisco/Oakland/Berkley and also stopped for a night in Santa Barbara. San Francisco is such a beautiful city, I love all the trees and the clean air. It is really a nice balance between NY and LA. Not sure if I want to live there, but this trip was exactly what I needed. Here is a little photo story of my journey. I need to develop my black and white film, so look for those later.

I love this classic friend shot of the amazing Cameron Bird

This is a new friend putting on a helmet too small, I like the balance between my flash and the ambient light in the background.

Truck drivers must get bored, but who wouldn’t want to get their picture snapped?

I was actually excited to be returning to Southern California, but not Orange County…

More on this trip soon.

Bad is Good

November 2, 2009

I go through phases as many people do, good is different to me in different seasons. I sometimes go through a bad is good phase. This means to me, don’t try so hard, don’t use good equipment, don’t care and point and shoot. Here are a couple shots I took and developed and didn’t clean up and didn’t try too hard. This is just a personal expression I have to do as an exercise in creativity.

Local Natives

September 6, 2009

I recently did a photo shoot with the band Local Natives. I had some serious technical difficulties, my digital camera was very tired from a wedding days before. I brought several film cameras to play with, but when my digital didn’t want to cooperate, I was forced to use my back ups. I recently purchased a Mamiya RB67 for a great deal on craigslist, so untested and with film who knows how old, this became my key camera. Here are my favorite shots.

I think this one is the most like them.

It was nice to do a shoot all in film, I have not done this since college. It forced me to think a lot more using an entirely mechanical camera. You think about every shot before you take it, with a 6×7 format you only get 10 shots per roll of film. I sure love film. I plan on using this camera more in the future with more success.

He returns

August 17, 2009

My brother returned from his trip to Mongolia recently. He was gone for around 3 months and didn’t shave. This is what he looked like the morning after his return.

Shooting Airplanes

July 19, 2009

Something I did a long time ago and wanted to do again, was go and take pictures of low flying airplanes. Whenever I drive by John Wayne Airport, I try to have a camera ready for airplanes buzzing the 405. On this day I met up at the more popular LAX with friend, Corey Nickols, an amazing photographer and interesting guy. I decided to shoot film and cross process it, which I have not done in a long time. The planes were so close that my 50mm was not wide enough at times. Here are a couple favorites.

We will be doing this again.
