Grass is Greener

October 29, 2008

I have been featured on "Grass is Greener" today! Please take a look here or click on the banner to see a little retrospective of some of my past work.

THE GRASS REALLY IS GREENER

Grass is Greener was birthed with only one goal in mind- gettin' back to basics. through time, & the influence of modern technology, we've lost so many tools & techniques that have helped craft what so many of us as surfers, artists, & musicians, love & thrive off of to this day; blurry washed-out photographs, non-saturated & faded art, less friendly wave-riding equipment & raw music recordings from our recent golden eras; it all leads us to the past.

Grass is Greener is our way of returning to our roots.. showcasing photographs, art, wave-riding, shapes, lifestyles, musicianship, natural flow, positive energy, creations, artists & advocates alike that fully represent & live out the past; when the art was pure, the styles were innovative, the music was raw, the boards were basic, & in both the photos & film..
..the grass truly was greener.

Photo Booth

October 28, 2008

Today is my birthday, last Friday was my birthday party, but today I am 24 years of age. For my birthday I asked a good friend from college, Nate Simpson, if I could use his studio for my party. I wanted this to be a grand celebration and since his studio is in Costa Mesa, friends from all over could attend with ease. I also wanted to create a photo booth within. My own personal photo booth has been a desire of mine for over a year. I finally created one but it wasn't anything I could take home, but it was quite a hit, along with my button maker. You can see a couple good photo strips below, but almost all of them can be viewed HERE or by clicking on the image.

Thank you everyone who made it and thank you Nate for a successful party!

Tourists

October 23, 2008

One of my favorite and least favorite parts of traveling around Italy was all the tourists. We made friends with other tourists while in transit, waiting in lines, and just wondering around. Then we would bump into them again. Those were good tourists. My least favorite part about all the tourists is when I was trying to experience an authentic Italy and I would hear people chatting about in English or people taking pictures of everything in site. Yes, I was a tourist on this trip.

There were times when my brother and I were bored; so, we would take the most touristy looking photos we could, trying to stand as close as we could to other tourists we didn't know. Often times we would try to make our faces look as unenthusiastic as possible. Enjoy my last post of Italy.

A bunch of tourists in Venice

Lots of people took photos of this advertisement, so we did too.

Just getting in everyones way.

This guy to the left kept moving away, and my brother would move closer.

This guy moved closer to me.

A bunch of people were killed behind me a long time ago. No one died on this day.

Pompeii and lots of little tourists plus my bigger, but younger, brother.

Roma

October 22, 2008

Rome was hands down my favorite place in Italy; it was also the last place I visited. There is so much history there, and it is just beautiful; I love cities. I hope you enjoy.

The colosseum was as big as I anticipated.

This was my favorite shot I took from the tour bus.

We spent all afternoon walking around these ruins.

Aren't these trees amazing?

monumental

This is just so peaceful to me.

The Pantheon has to be witnessed.

Ancient Roman street (Pompeii)

The street we stayed on, near the Spanish Steps.

The semi-private tour of the Vatican was the highlight of our trip. This last photo leads me to my next post all about tourists...

Tuscany: Pisa, Siena, Firenze

October 20, 2008

Most of my time in Italy was spent doing a lot of sightseeing, which was tiring. We saw the leaning tower of Pisa, Florence and Siena. As follows are my favorite photos, not just the sites.

This bike is a workhorse!

See the airplane?

Siena is a really magical city.

Reflections are nice

I was here

I love this light!

If you have been to Florence, then you know what building this is.

Next train to... Rome.

Venezia (Venice)

October 18, 2008

Venice is pretty incredible; it is like no where I have ever been before. However, one day there is enough; I had three. A map can just hint at where to go but, getting lost is the whole point. Most alleys look the same as do many buildings. Below are a few of my favorite photos of this photogenic city.

Great view over the Grand Canal

lots of clotheslines in Italy

I am sure you have seen a photo like this on the internet, I have; so, I snapped one when this scene unfolded in front of me.

one key for a room of four people means long days wandering and sitting

If you are in Venice for more than a day, then go to Burano Island. All the buildings are colorful. I loved it.

I mailed lots of postcards to a few people; so, I would look for mail boxes whenever I went out.

The Grand Canal

There are no cars in Venice, only boats.

Garage?

These buildings remind me of something out of a Tim Burton film.

Sunrise

Rimini, Italy + Race Day

October 17, 2008

I returned from Italy recently. I was there for my brothers duathalon race. Going into this trip I heard way too many "You better take lots of good photos Chad." I took lots of photos but decided that I hate travel photography and am not very good at action sports photography. The photos that I will reveal to you might not lead you to that decision, but I was kind of bored with a lot of my photos. At least I learned this much.

However, I did enjoy the light very much. This may be a bold statement or an obvious statement, but I think Photography, out of all the arts, captures and portrays light the best. I am a lover of light, and that is why photography is my most suitable medium. I observed lots of light shaping buildings and buildings creating light shapes. I took too many photos just so I have a photo of all the sites, but I don't think I needed to try so hard. Next time, postcards may be the only photos people receive from me of the sites. And if you were wondering what I like to take pictures of most, that would be people.

So here it is! The first stop of the trip was Rimini, Italy, the location of the race. This place is a typical touristy city and is only interesting in the summer. The race was the only interesting thing to me.
